Verdict

The price-to-performance ratio of the Gateway FPD1975W seems a bit unfavourable to me. A built-in adjustable stand and bundled DVI cable would make it a better value.

Whatever else it is, TT is not cricket

Television loves it for the ratings. Administrators love it because television loves it. Players love it for the money — fistfuls of it.

TT's bursting out all over. A World Cup already. An interstate competition here, regional comps in England, South Africa and the West Indies. Two in India, perhaps three.

They're only half-formed, half-sanctioned, making rules and regulations on the run, but, well, heh? Short form, see. Much better.

Besides, it's flourishing in India, and don't we all love India. Cultural misunderstanding? Press beat-up. Horrid Harbhajan Singh? Some of our best friends wear turbans, we suddenly remember.

The only part of TT that all these hyper-excited folk can take or leave is the cricket.

The players don't like it; they've said so.

Hometown Hero: Brennan playing well for Bentley

Kim Brennan said she didn't know what to expect when she joined the Bentley women's basketball team last fall. But given the way she has performed, being out of the loop might not be such a bad thing.

The 5-8 point guard from Locust Valley High School is the highest scoring freshman in the Northeast-10 conference after 19 games. She is averaging 11.3 points per game. Although she has led Bentley (13-6, 11-3) to an impressive start, Brennan will likely get better as she gets further acquainted with the college game.

"I'm still learning out there," she said. "I enjoy playing every day and being with my teammates. I'm really happy with my decision to come here."

FTSE Down In Results Blizzard As BoE Verdict Eyed

Britain's biggest share index fell early on Thursday as a flurry of company results disappointed investors and financials slipped ahead of a central bank rate decision.

At 0903 GMT the FTSE 100 was down 54.4 points, or 0.9 percent, at 5,821.0.

The Bank of England's (BoE) Monetary Policy Committee is widely expected to cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 5.25 percent when its monthly two-day meeting concludes at 1200 GMT.

The European Central Bank is expected to leave euro zone rates at 4 percent at 1245 GMT.

"It's not the (BoE) decision, it's the accompanying comments that are key," said David Scott, a senior stockbroker at Redmayne-Bentley. "There is this school of thought to think, wait a minute, if they (U.S.) do go into recession, they may not be able to cut rates dramatically as some people are hoping.

Hester's 2 TDs for Bears send Saints out of playoffs

Adrian Peterson ran for 91 yards and Garrett Wolfe caught a screen pass for 31 yards.

Offensive coordinator Ron Turner made sure not to finish the season without showing off a few tricks. Peterson tossed a nine-yard touchdown to Berrian on a halfback option, and Hester looked for Berrian down the field after an end-around before getting sacked.

The defense struggled to stop Saints rookie Pierre Thomas, an Illinois alumnus who did a better than fair impression of the injured Reggie Bush with 226 yards from scrimmage.

But it harassed Drew Brees, who completed 35 of 60 passes for 320 yards, with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Urlacher had his fourth interception in five weeks and Brown had a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Then there was Hester, the record-setter who can single-handedly keep the Bears in just about any game.

Record number of pupils skip school

Truancy in England's schools rose to record levels last year, with about 63,000 pupils skipping class every day, Government figures suggest.

Nearly 273,000 pupils missed at least one day of school every week through truancy, illness and other reasons.

The total rate of absence fell to its lowest level, with children in primary and secondary schools missing 6.49% of sessions during 2006-07.

But the rate of "unauthorised absence" - used to judge truancy - rose to its highest on record, with pupils away for 1% of all school sessions. This was up from 0.92% the previous year, the Department for Children, Schools and Families said.

The unauthorised absence figure meant about 63,000 pupils were skipping class in England's schools on a typical day.
