Big wheels keep up to the marque by buying flash

AS ECONOMIC barometers go, there could hardly be any more dashing — a $580,000 status symbol on wheels — and at least 80 Australians have already placed their order for Ferrari's slick new model, the F430 Scuderia.

The latest street incarnation of the world's most famous motor racing emblem is an eight-cylinder, 503-horsepower, high-performance vehicle its Italian makers would seem wholly justified in touting as a "unique supercar perfect for passionate and sporty customers".

Then there's the Porsche 911 turbo, retailing at $370,000. More than 100 Australians put themselves behind the wheel of one last year, and others are queuing to take delivery of the next generation GT2 priced at $425,000. Property developer Zac Brankovic, 38, who has been driving Porsches for about five years, shelled out $260,000 for his Porsche Carrera S convertible.

Hook told to speak up

Wales head coach Warren Gatland has urged James Hook to get more vocal if he is to become one of the best fly-halves in the world.

The Ospreys back played a starring role in Wales' 26-19 win at Twickenham on Saturday, outshining World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson and kicking six goals from six attempts.

According to Gatland, all he lacks is a vocal presence on the field.

"He is a player with an enormous amount of potential and skill," said Gatland.

"The fact he kicked his goals was as important as anything.

"If Wales had kicked their goals against Fiji at the World Cup they would have made the quarter-finals.

"I thought the skill he showed to create the try for Lee Byrne - the footwork, the slight of hand - was quite sensational.

Montoya sets fastest lap of Las Vegas testing

LAS VEGAS --Juan Pablo Montoya paced testing Tuesday at Las Vegas Motorspeedway, going 186.761 mph in his Dodge to post the fastest lap of the two-day session.

Montoya's mark in the afternoon session bettered Kyle Busch's fast lap of 183.580 on Monday and Carl Edwards' mark of 184.256 in the Tuesday morning runs.

In all, 12 drivers bettered Edwards' morning run, including four Toyota drivers as the automaker's fleet continued to impress in preseason testing. AJ Allmendinger was second fastest to Montoya, running a 185.752 in a Camry fielded by Red Bull Racing.

Tony Stewart was 10th fastest in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, David Reutimann was 11th for Michael Waltrip Racing and Busch was 12th for Gibbs. The strong showings come after two weeks of solid runs in Daytona for Toyota, which struggled in its first season of Sprint Cup competition last year.

WSB cancels July Fourth Parade

After nearly 50 years, WSB-TV is discontinuing its annual "Salute 2 America" July 4 parade. The family-friendly festival of floats, marching bands, balloons, TV stars and military personnel annually wound its way through the streets of downtown for 47 years.

Instead, the Atlanta ABC network affiliate plans to expand its metro area coverage on the patriotic holiday this year to include more geographically diverse July 4 celebrations.

"When the parade began, Atlanta was a very small town and now our coverage goals are very different," explained WSB-TV general manager Bill Hoffman in an interview with the AJC on Thursday. "We're trying to broaden our coverage over the July Fourth holiday."

Added Channel 2 program director Art Rogers via a statement: "As a native Atlantan, I've personally witnessed the incredible growth of the metro area.

Saturn Flextreme aims at 444 miles

It's Saturn's follow-up version of the 2007's Detroit Auto Show concept hit, the Chevy Volt, and what's important about this Saturn is the progress that it demonstrates.

Looking at what's before you, it's conceivable that GM will have a vehicle based on its purpose-built eFlex hybrid platform and powertrain technology in dealerships. It could be as early as 2010-11.

Driving range after leaving the house with a fully charged battery pack and a full tank of ultra-low-sulfur diesel is estimated to be 444 miles. See other hot cars at show »

The ecologically minded plug-in Saturn features pure electric propulsion. One motor drives both front wheels. The on-board three-cylinder 1.3-liter turbo-diesel is only used to charge the car's lithium-ion battery pack.
