Shafer Property reportedly interested in buying Inwood Village

A Dallas retail center developer is in talks to buy one of the city's oldest shopping centers.

Shafer Property Co. is negotiating to buy the Inwood Village complex, real estate brokers say.

Inwood Village, at Lovers Lane and Inwood Road, was built in 1949 and was hailed as the city's first "modern" shopping center.

The 235,000-square-foot retail complex has been remodeled several times and is anchored by the historic Inwood Theater.

The property – not including the theater – has been owned by pension fund investors for several years. It has tenants that include the Gap, Cantina Laredo, Ann Taylor Loft and St. Bernard Sports.

Shafer Property founder Steve Shafer wouldn't confirm or deny interest in the property.

AIAM Statement on Support for EPA's Waiver Decision

ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, AIAM reiterated its support for a single federal approach to improving motor vehicle fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by intervening on the side of EPA in a lawsuit brought by the State of California against EPA concerning California's greenhouse gas emissions regulations.

"This is not a lawsuit to resist greenhouse gas emissions regulation. Rather, our intervention is focused on only one issue -- who should set those standards," said Michael J. Stanton, President and CEO of AIAM. "We believe that for important policy and legal reasons, it is the federal government that should set those standards."

"AIAM has long supported efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy," said Michael J.

A Track Through Time

Richard Petty was a 21-year-old kid when he showed up for the first Daytona 500 in 1959. When he pulled through the tunnel of newly built Daytona International Speedway, he saw a great expanse of nothing.

"We inspected the cars in the grass," Petty, 69, said recently. "And then it rained for a couple of days and the cars were actually sitting in water, because that was a swamp to begin with."

Today, Daytona ranks among the most famous racing venues in the world. Its crown jewel, the Daytona 500, will be run for the 50th time on Feb. 17, and Petty, who finished 57th in the first 500 before going on to win a record seven times, will be the honorary starter.

"In the beginning, Daytona was just another race," Petty said. "Darlington was our biggest race, and it took Daytona two or three years just to get even with Darlington.

The video column today in the Weekend Cue section incorrectly states that "High School Musical 2" was the most-watched basic cable show ever. The New England-Baltimore NFL game Monday on ESPN was seen by an average of 17.5 million viewers; the premiere of "High School Musical 2" last summer was watched by an average of 17.2 million. Weekend Cue was printed in advance.

An article Wednesday about state Supreme Court Justice Annette K. Ziegler's decision to sit on a tax case stated that former Justice Jon P. Wilcox paid a $10,000 forfeiture over allegations that his campaign illegally coordinated with a pro-school choice group. The payment was a settlement, not a forfeiture.

It Is What It Is … But What Is It?

The instant analysis on ESPN2 yesterday was that Junior's move was somehow like Clemens going to the Yankees, the first time around. But such comparisons are by necessity tortured ones, because there is really no analogue for Dale Jr. Has any other professional sport ever been so dependent on an athlete who wasn't close to being the best in the game?

Junior has won a good many races, including the Daytona 500. He's competitive with the top drivers, particularly on short tracks and in restrictor plate races like Daytona and Talladega. But he finished fifth in the Chase last season, and the year before that he didn't even make the cut for NASCAR's playoff. He's never won a championship and is currently 14th in the 2007 standings. To offer my own tortured analogy, he's as famous as Tiger Woods and as good as Scott Verplank.

Home of a giant: Tour Jon Runyan's house in pictures

In his enormous kitchen with the six-burner Viking stove, the colossal Philadelphia Eagle Jon Runyan points to the kitchen cabinets.

"You pay all that money for that wood and you put a distressed finish on it," says Runyan, chuckling at the irony.

On 23 acres in Mount Laurel -- with 13,000 square feet, 10 bathrooms, five bedrooms and two guest apartments in the making -- Runyan's French chateau-style home is sized for the big man and his family.

On the gridiron, Philadelphia's Iron Man is a fierce presence: 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds. Imagine a good-looking, goateed Shrek with consummate athletic skills. On the Eagles' Web site, coach Andy Reid says this about his veteran offensive tackle: "He is going to maul you and beat you up and feel pretty good about doing it .
