McCain's Anti-Obama Weapon

Can't they speed the process up? ... Voters don't tune in until the last 24 hours anyway--so the last 24 hours might as well come sooner! ... 12:09.A.M.

Only waterworks works: Now he's crying. [via Lucianne] 2:36 A.M.

I'm as flummoxed as everyone else, having gone along with the near-universal consensus that Obama would win. Mystery Pollster has his work cut out for him. But I'm confident that soon enough there will be so many powerful explanations for what now seems an out-of-the-blue event that it will appear to be overdetermined. It's important to memorialize this moment of utter stupefaction.

That said, here are four possible factors:

Today on the Presidential Campaign Trail

He gets criticized for kidding around, Huckabee acknowledged, but he takes the presidency seriously.

"I think this is a serious job. Being president is a serious job. Running this country is serious business. The issues we face are serious," he told about 175 people in a college gymnasium here. "The reason I have fun is because I love America."

Without naming rival Mitt Romney, he referred to attack ads Romney is running against fellow Republican John McCain in New Hampshire and aired against Huckabee in Iowa. Huckabee said he is running for something, not against his rivals.

"There are some things we could do better," Huckabee said. "I'm a person who loves his country, because I understand how good it is. But I'm running for office because I know it could do better."

Llodra wins in Rotterdam

France's Michael Llodra battled his way to a gripping 6-7 6-3 7-6 victory over Robin Soderling in the final of the Rotterdam Open.

Llodra, who also won in Adelaide at the start of the year, became the fourth Frenchman after Cedric Pioline and Nicolas Escude (twice) to claim the Dutch event since the turn of the century in two hours and eight minutes.

Ranked 58th in the world before this week, Llodra closed out a dramatic week that saw all eight seeds knocked out before the quarter-finals, with the Frenchman upsetting second seed Nikolay Davydenko in round two.

"I could not have won this match a year ago," he admitted. "I could never have expected to win two tournaments in two months. But I'm fighting more now on every point and that can change a match.

NHRA set for big changes Altered championship format figures to add ...

The NHRA has made two major changes to its professional series that should produce a more exciting season.

The first is an overhaul to its championship playoff format, and the other ensures more qualifying drama throughout Powerade Drag Racing Series events.

The second year of the Countdown to the Championship has been changed so the first 18 races, which is called the regular season, will determine the 10 teams that will battle for season titles over the last six races in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock.

Last season was the first for the Countdown format. Contenders were cut to eight in pro categories after 17 races, then pared to four for the last four, including the October event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
