| Maria Sharapova shines at IMG players party
The traditional IMG players party at Crown was a glamorous affair with the likes of Maria Sharapova and James Blake leading the stars on show. But earlier Jelena Jankovic, who has climbed into the top five in the world, stole the limelight at a party held by Prince. Jankovic looked more like a model wearing 10cm heels and a small black mini-dress. Alighting from a yellow Lamborghini without showing her underwear was a struggle. "It's hard getting out of a car in a dress like this with photographers everywhere," Jankovic said. Joining her at the party, which was held at the Lamborghini outlet in South Yarra was controversial world No.4 Russian Nikolay Davydenko. He turned up looking smart and colour co-ordinated with a black car.
Who's Blogging
Early in the seagoing, sunken-treasure, romance/adventure/flotsam called "Fool's Gold," someone says, "You married a guy for sex, and then expected him to be smart." Is the speaker referring to the unholy union between Warner Bros. and Matthew McConaughey? No, no, no. The statement is directed at the perky Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson), who is about to divorce the hunky Ben Finnegan (McConaughey), the irresponsible "treasure salvor" who is so adorable with his shirt off that a rueful Tess will spend the rest of the movie listing in his direction, like the Titanic. .
Brawn Seelster Prevails In WFR's Top Trot
Brawn Seelster stole the spotlight from race favourite Porsche Hall, who was making the final start of her career, in tonight's $18,400 Preferred Trot at Western Fair Raceway. Carscot Max (Mike Whelan) rounded out the top three. Rankin shares ownership on the career winner of $219,885 with partner Jeff Goreski. The victory was the gelding's 21st lifetime win. Plumbing Princess snuck up the rail for trainer/driver Donnie Rankin Jr. to take home weekly bragging rights in the $15,200 Fillies & Mares Preferred. The five-year-old daughter of Astreos tracked pacesetter Goldies Cam (Bruce Richardson) through fractions of :28, :58.4 and 1:29 before scooting up the rail for the 1:58.3 decision.

Despite efforts to reform the primaries, Iowa and New Hampshire have clung on to their status as the first contests in the nation. These states go first not because they are litmus-test states or representative of broader America. In fact, Iowa, corn capital of the US, is whiter, more rural, older and probably wealthier than most states. On January 3 about 7% of Iowans will head out to "caucus" for their preferred candidate. The actual method of selecting candidates varies from state to state, but, generally, registered Democrat and Republican voters turn out for an election or a caucus to select delegates who will represent their preferred candidate at the parties' national convention later in the year. Unlike the staged doorstops that now characterise Australian political leaders' interactions with the public, American presidential hopefuls are expected to answer questions from anyone who turns up.
Reading 1 - 2 Aston Villa
Aston Villa outclassed Reading at the Madejski Stadium to bring their dream of Champions League football nearer to reality and push their opponents closer towards Premier League relegation. Goals from Ashley Young and substitute Marlon Harewood were enough to take the points against a side who have now lost a club record eight successive league fixtures and appear incapable of saving themselves. - O'Neill salutes Villa hitmen Villa could have triumphed by a much larger margin, especially as Gareth Barry missed a first-half penalty. Nicky Shorey's 90th-minute free-kick consolation - Reading's first goal in 540 minutes of play - had no bearing on the game. Reading chairman John Madejski had called for the fans to turn the stadium into a "cauldron of optimism'' but although James Harper planted a shot into Scott Carson's midriff within 30 seconds, it quickly became apparent Villa would simply not allow any release from the paralysis that has gripped the home side's season.

UTStarcom awards BSNL deal to IBM
Ofcom put forward three options for consultation. One is to give unconditional approval to the Sky proposal, leaving competition issues to be resolved later. We believe these plans are a positive step for the DTT platform and we look forward to responding to Ofcoms consultation in due course."
