Higher) education is at a crisis point, the result of uncontrolled cost increases over the past 20 years that have greatly exceeded the rate of inflation or annual consumer price indexes," the Houston Chronicle observes in an editorial. "Tuition forces parents to pull all-nighters, too," adds Paul Daugherty in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

If something isn’t done soon to slow or defray the escalating cost of a college or graduate school education, low and moderate-income students and their families will be stranded on the bus. An estimated quarter million prospective students a year are now being shut out of the system because of tuition costs and other factors, according to The National Center of Pubic Policy and Higher Education.

There should be no higher a priority in our national agenda.

Habs' storm clouds clear for Ryder

Come home, Michael Ryder, all is forgiven.

What else is there to say about a 6-3 victory over a Tampa Bay team that appeared to have the Habs by the throat after erasing a two-goal deficit during the second half of the second period? Instead, what happened was that Ryder delivered his second goal of the game after others by Andrei Kostitsyn and Kyle Chipchura.

It's why, needlesss to say, Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau was wearing a smile that threatened never to go away.

Black Britain's darkest hour

There were public demonstrations in Wolverhampton and London,' says Robert Shepherd, Powell's biographer and producer of a forthcoming BBC Radio 4 documentary on the 'Rivers of Blood' speech. 'One thousand dockers went on strike to protest at his dismissal, marching to Westminster carrying placards saying "Back Britain, not Black Britain".' On the Tuesday after the speech, 23,000 letters arrived at Powell's home and the Post Office had to provide a van solely for Powell's mail. During the next 10 days, there were 700 telegrams and 100,000 letters. Only 800 were in disagreement.

Although Powell claimed he was speaking out on behalf of concerned constituents, there was little evidence of racial tension in the city. As far back as 1955, the managing director of a rubber firm that employed black workers had told the Wolverhampton newspaper: 'There is not antipathy of any kind between white employees and the coloured men.' As a policeman in 1968, Mellor recalls little tension between the communities.

Villa stun Rovers to climb to sixth

Once again the home side were made to pay with Dowd controversially adjudging that Nelsen had tugged the shirt of Young in the box, and reducing the home side to 10 men.

Barry's clinical set-piece put the game out of Rovers' reach and incited the home fans, whose mood did not improve when Dowd waved away a loud shout for handball against Bouma five minutes later.

Villa had justifiable claims for a second penalty dismissed by Dowd 12 minutes from time after Young tumbled in the box under pressure from Samba but was simply told to pick himself up.

Young responded by sealing Villa's victory two minutes later with a superb finish past Friedel after getting onto the end of Agbonlahor's cut-back to the edge of the box.

And to round off a thoroughly impressive evening substitute Marlon Harewood grabbed the fourth in the final minute after Friedel could only parry Carew's initial shot into his path.

The new mandate: First, find them a home

We're sending a message that poverty, serious trauma, domestic violence, childhood developmental delays, and addiction can all be fixed with an apartment," said Gloria Guard, president of the People's Emergency Center in West Philadelphia, which has an annual budget of $6 million.

Deborah Harmon's life unraveled in 1995, after she tried to burn down her home in Philadelphia and lost her job as an executive secretary.

In and out of shelters, she lived on the streets, sleeping on park benches and in subway stations, often drunk or high. She was hospitalized at least 10 times for depression and schizophrenia.

In 2006, after six months in jail for panhandling, Harmon was released to a shelter. That was when Horizon House offered her an apartment.

ATL's Knowledge Discovery Capability

Posted in:

General

I try to keep my posts non-technical, but sometimes I fail. This is one of those times. So it's probably best to skip the article below unless you played Dungeons & Dragons as a child.

Accenture Technology Labs' rather generically-named Knowledge Discovery Capability (KDC) is actually a sophisticated data integration and visualization tool designed primarily for use in research and investigative fields (e.g., science, law enforcement, intelligence, disease management, capital markets, etc).

The KDC stems from a disturbing statistic: Globally, government intelligence analysts spend roughly 80 percent of their time gathering information (from numerous databases) and only 20 percent analyzing it.

Le Mans comes to Levens

The Gulf Porsche 917 sportscar, famous for race victories at circuits across Europe, is certainly not the car you would expect to see when stopping for a quick fill-up at your local petrol station. But that's exactly what visitors to Levens forecourt and car dealership, P.V. Dobson & Sons, are being treated to this week.

"It's certainly turning a lot of heads," says General Manager Chris Hammond. "The Porsche is in the showroom which is directly in view of the forecourt pumps, so you can't miss it. The timing is great as we're also launching the new Jaguar XF on Thursday 7th February, and with our other display cars and smart new Gulf branding people will have a lot to look at if they come down in the next few days."

P.V. Dobson & Sons have owned the site since 1979, which includes dealerships for Jaguar, Volvo and Mazda.
